Upcoming Events: Platforms and Elections

Share your ideas and get involved with your IIDA Student Chapter. Run for office this Thursday, April 1.

If you chose to have a visual presentation, please email a picture of yourself and any other files you will need for a short 3-5 minute presentation to Jenna {email on sidebar} no later than Tuesday, March 30 at 1 pm.

Things we've done in the past: events, mentoring, speakers, service. What will you do next? It's up to you to decide!

hygiene kits

We will be putting together hygiene kits in room 802 at 10:30 this Thursday, March 25th. Hygiene kits are sent to places in need like Haiti and Chili and they are in great demand right now. If you would like to donate supplies or cash talk with Lorri or Jenna.UPDATE: Thank you to all of you who came and helped put together the kits yesterday. We had a great turn out and were able to raise enough money to double the amount of kits we put together! Come to the next meeting on April 1st to help put together the second batch.

Stocking Event Review

The Stocking Event this year was held at The Art Institute and the donations were staggering. And so was the talent! Every year the stockings get better in my opinion.
Most of the stockings go to kids with cancer while a few are chosen to be auctioned off with the proceeds going towards groceries and other essentials for the families of those children. Our very own Ashley Stephens' gorgeous ballet stocking was selected to be auctioned and went home with a very nice AutoCAD instructor we all know and love. Congrats Ashley!!

Upcoming Stocking Event

Now is the time to start thinking of designs for a fun stocking. That way you can take a few spare moments here and there to work on it. {Where are those spare moments hiding right now?} We'll have an event to get together and work on the stockings, but it is never too early to start dreaming!
It'll be a great project to put some creative energy towards when you feel a little overwhelmed with school projects. And what better end result than a smile on a child's face? Get excited!

"....Last year we added an auction element which raised money to help the families of the children with cancer. (HKWC) So for those of you making stockings, we are asking if you will please make a choice on whether you want to make a stocking for a child 18 months-18 years old; or make a stocking that someone will buy. ALL money goes to the families in the form of grocery or gas cards. It's the most rewarding charity I've ever been a part of because we know we are providing 100% direct
help.

The auction stockings also open up a chance to design a different kind of stocking than what might be done for a child. This stocking might appeal to someone wanting to purchase a unique, hand-made, one of a kind piece of artwork! How to decide what to do? Please let your heart be your guide and let me know if you have any questions.

We will be finalizing all the details and asking directly for your help in the next few weeks!"

Opening Social

The second annual IIDA Opening Social was a great opportunity to meet other ID students, talk about the program and upcoming events, and hear from President Richards. He spoke about the enthusiasm and passion he sees in the Interior Design students and the divine inspiration we have within us that makes our creative talents really come to life. The importance of direction, balance and organization were all key points that made the thoughts he shared with us ring true.

Elections will be coming up soon. Get involved with IIDA, as on officer, or as a member, to help shape the student chapter of IIDA at LDSBC.
A few things to think about: ways to give back to the community, educational forums, mentoring program within our ID program to help lift each other.

Service Project

Our Habitat for Humanity service project turned out to be a lot of fun. Yes, it was just the 3 of us there this time so hopefully next spring more of you will come join us!

The morning started out with clearing a ditch of tumble weeds and bushes, then we tackled a very large pile of branches and garbage and put it all in the dumpster. This was a good task to put us on first to get us over the cold and the surprise that we were going to be doing exterior work instead of interiors as planned.

Brit and I heard a yelp and saw that Kia had disappeared into the dumpster! Talk about throwing yourself into your work.The majority of our time was spent working on getting ready for the foundation to be poured. We secured the forms, then Mike (the builder) used the surveying equipment to tell us where to put marks to guide us as we made chalk lines and hammered in nails to guide the people who will pour the cement tomorrow.

We then placed 2x4s as more supports, hammered them in, hammered in stakes, then hammered nails thru the stakes into the 2x4s to hold everything in place. We hammered a lot.

Brittany insisted on precision. The foundation will be the straightest all because of her need to have things line up. Kia is a fantastic hammerer. She impressed Mike like no other guy he has ever worked with. Way to go!

We had a really good time working hard and entertaining ourselves when we started to get cold.
One of the highlights of the day was meeting this man who lives in one of the homes built by Habitat for Humanity. His wife is blind and has terrible allergic reactions to many different smells and chemicals so receiving a home from Habitat literally saved her life he told us. He likes to come over and chat with Mike who has built most of the homes in this development.


Plan on coming next time, it was so much fun! Thanks for a hard days work ladies!

Meet in the Commons Area at 7:20 if you would like to carpool

Pack your own lunch and plan to be there from 8 am to 3 pm

Wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty. We will be painting, tiling or whatever else they need us to do.

You must have a release form filled out in order to volunteer. Pick one up tomorrow at the meeting (info in the previous post) or print one out from the Habitat for Humanity website.

This is going to be a lot of fun, see you there!

Mauro Barros

Landscape Designer/Engineer

Mauro Barros is one of the top Landscape Architects in Brazil. He will be teaching us about the Elements of Landscape design and the importance of combining interior and exterior design.

We are excited about our new IIDA student chapter at LDSBC!!

Enter the logo design contest to be used for the 2008-2009 school year on the IIDA sweatshirts, website & posters.



SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONTEST:
Jpeg file created in an up to date illustrator program or a hand sketch
The design should include one or two colors max
The sweatshirts will be black, so please design accordingly.
For silk screening purposes please include a black and white copy of your design with notes indicating where you would like the colors placed.
No shading or gradation included in the design.

Campus Center

Hello All,

I know we're all just recuperating from finals, but I figured I would send this while everything is still fresh in our minds. As you all know, we are starting up our own IIDA campus center here at LDSBC, I think this will be a fun addition and hopefully enhance our learning experience here! In order to do this though, we need to have at least 15 student members, so I'm sending this to all of you that signed the sheet saying you would join. I'm sure most of you have already done so, but if you have not taken the time to register with IIDA please do so now.

Here is the link that will take you directly to the application. It only takes a few minutes and $40 (that is good through April of next year). I really would love it if every student was a part of this, so encourage your friends to join as well. Not only does IIDA have great events and learning tools for you, but we will also have some wonderful activities planned for you in the fall. I think by working together we'll all be able to better ourselves!
